4 credit - 140 hour training course based on the Department of Transportation Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) national standard ambulance curriculum. The program covers emergency medical techniques currently considered to be within the responsibility of the EMT-Basic individual providing emergency care with an ambulance service. Instruction involves lecture, practical and 8 hours of hospital observation training. Upon successful course completion, the participant will quality for certification and the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician exam. COMPASS Reading Comprehension Exam will now be required prior to acceptance.

NOTE:
Due to state regulations, students must be accepted by and registered through the Emergency Medical Services Supervisor.

Employers may place physical requirements on various jobs in this career field. Gateway Technical College strongly encourages you to investigate these physical requirements with employers to determine your employability before entering into this program.

EMT - Intermediate Transition Course

250 hours of training; 170 hours didactic (lecture and practical) and 80+ hours clinical. This course will permit individuals who are currently licensed EMT-I's (under the old curriculum) to transition up to the new EMT-Intermediate licensure level. Students are required to have a current Wisconsin EMT-Intermediate license and current Healthcare Provider CPR certification prior to registering for this course.

EMT - Intermediate

9 credit - 335(approx)-hours of training; 203-283.5 hours didactic (lecture and practical) and 110+ hours clinical/field. This course will permit individuals who are currently licensed EMT-Basic level to transition up to the new EMT-Intermediate licensure level. Students are required to have a current Wisconsin EMT-Basic license and current Healthcare Provider CPR certification prior to registering for this course. The course and clinical work will allow students to perform advanced level skill assessments, to administer first line cardiac drug therapy, and to achieve a higher level of clinical decision-making skills.

EMT-Paramedic course

Gateway offers a 36 credit Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program. Qualifications for this course require students be licensed at the EMT-Basic level, and be current in Healthcare Provider CPR. The course is offered as a full-time day program, which meets Monday through Friday from 8am until 4:30pm, and a part-time evening class on two nights and two Saturdays per month. The daytime program meets each semester. The evening course runs throughout the entire school year. At the end of the course, students will take the National Registry Exam in order to receive licensure at the paramedic level. The entire course includes approximately 640 hours of classroom lecture and skills labs, 250 hours spent in hospital clinical situations, and 250 hours of supervised field time with a paramedic level ambulance. Graduates of the EMT-Paramedic program can expect to find employment with private ambulance companies, fire departments or hospital emergency rooms.
